Besides professional teams, the company is also the official insurer of numerous colleges and universities and local organizations, like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Being Mutual Makes a Difference: Our status as a mutual company sets us apart from our competition. This means we don’t have stockholders, answer to Wall Street analysts or pay dividends to investors. Our focus is on developing products and services that help our members live healthier lives.

A Focus on Ohio Communities: Ohio has been our home since 1934. Our more than 2,000 employees live and work in this state and we love all of the unique and wonderful communities we serve. That’s why we’re committed to working closely with numerous civic, educational and cultural organizations to help promote and support a variety of social causes. We donate our time, talents and resources to help make a positive and lasting impact where we can.

Plans and Services that Meet the Needs of Our Members: We know that different people and different organizations have different needs. That’s why we offer an array of health insurance plans, wellness programs, and care management programs for individuals, families, retirees, and businesses of every size. We may even be able to customize a benefit plan to fit specific needs. We accurately process claims within 30 days of submission, plus, to help group officials better understand how health benefit expenses affect the bottom line, we provide data management and reporting.

Exceptional Customer Service: At Medical Mutual, we treat every one of our customers like neighbors. When you call Medical Mutual, you speak directly to local Customer Case specialists dedicated to meeting your needs. Our customer service standards meet or exceed NCQA requirements and nearly 95 percent of calls are resolved during the initial contact. We also process thousands of claims each day, with 99 percent accuracy.

Mutual Appreciation: If our customers are willing to put their trust in us, we should put our trust in them. That’s why we make every effort to patronize our business customers when we can. We even created a customer engagement and employee incentive program called Mutual Appreciation that makes it easy and rewarding for our employees to frequent our business customers. It’s something our national competitors are unable to do. And it’s just one way we show our support beyond providing high-quality health insurance. FDA Approves Gene Therapy to Treat Rare Form of Blindness

In December of 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the new gene therapy, Luxturna (voretigene neparvovec) (see December 5, 2017 Broker Update). Luxturna, expected to launch in the first quarter of 2018, is meant to treat a rare form of blindness called biallelic RPE65 mutation-associated retinal dystrophy, which is estimated to affect 1,000 to 3,000 total patients in the U.S.

Cincinnati Eye Institute is currently the only facility in Ohio that has been certified to administer Luxturna. Medical Mutual is in the process of contracting with this facility.
