In Case You Missed It: UnitedHealthcare’s Fourth Quarter Updates for 2022

October 21, 2021/in Carrier, Employee Benefits, UnitedHealthcare, Webinars/by Cornerstone

In case you missed it, UnitedHealthcare presented their 2022 updates for all small group products on a recent Group Corner Webinar. A link to the webinar is below if you would like to review.

Some highlights from the webinar:

  • The Ohio Chamber MEWA is using 75% participation after valid waivers. Other UHC products are still on the 50% participation rate.
  • The Ohio Chamber offers a first year discount to agents and groups joining the chamber with $100 off.
  • UHC is providing medically underwritten quotes for the Ohio Chamber MEWA with a member level census.

Got groups that don’t want to do FormFire? UnitedHealthcare may have an answer for you!

UHC announced during the webinar that they will provide underwritten quotes with a member-level census for groups of 10+ enrolled (that’s enrolled, not eligible) up to 50 ATNE for the Ohio Chamber MEWA and AllSavers’ Level Funded plans. This is available for November 2021 through January 2022 effective dates. Groups must have current coverage in place.

If interested, here’s how you can take advantage of this special offer:

  • If the group has completed FormFire, please submit applications instead for the best underwritten rates possible.
  • The Cornerstone quote template can be used and sent to the quote mailbox.
  • Quote turnaround time is currently 5-8 business days.
  • UHC will only underwrite with the census or applications, not both. They won’t flip back and forth.
  • UHC will default to quote the MEWA. If you prefer an AllSavers quote or want an AllSavers quote in addition to the MEWA quote, we ask that you please send a separate email with the census attached. Brokers may prefer AllSavers if the group may not be eligible for the MEWA for some reason.

UnitedHealthcare Delays Policy to Review Non-Urgent Emergency Room Visits

June 11, 2021/in Carrier, Employee Benefits, Individual, UnitedHealthcare/by Cornerstone

Recently, UnitedHealthcare announced they would review claims determined to be non-emergent that will be subject to limited coverage or no coverage in accordance with the member’s Certificate of Coverage. In response to backlash from the American Hospital Association and the American College of Emergency Physicians, UHC decided to delay the policy until the end of the pandemic.

“Based on feedback from our provider partners and discussions with medical societies, we have decided to delay the implementation of our emergency department policy until at least the end of the national public health emergency period,” Tracey Lempner, spokeswoman for the Minnesota-based insurer, said in a statement.

UnitedHealthcare Enhancing Capabilities for Emergency Department Utilization Payout for Non-Emergency Claims

June 4, 2021/in Carrier, Employee Benefits, UnitedHealthcare/by Cornerstone

Beginning July 1, 2021, UnitedHealthcare will enhance their capabilities to assess emergency department (ED) facility claims to determine if the ED event was emergent or non-emergent, according to existing plan provisions, in most states. Choosing the right care location may help members save.

ED claims will be evaluated based on several factors, including:

  • The patient’s presenting problem
  • The intensity of diagnostic services performed
  • Other patient complicating factors and external causes

Claims determined to be non-emergent will be subject to limited coverage or no coverage in accordance with the member’s Certificate of Coverage. This enhanced capability will apply to commercial fully insured ED facility claims in many states for dates of service on July 1, 2021, or later. Subject to regulatory approval, UHC will continue to expand this capability to additional states and segments.

The assessment applies to both in-network (INN) and out-of-network facility emergency department claims. The states included in the program are AL, AR, AZ, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MS, NE, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI, WV.

Effective dates are on and after July 1, 2021, on renewal for most UnitedHealthcare large group fully insured plans and on and after Jan. 1, 2022, for most small group fully insured plans on renewal.

Beginning June 1, 2021, some fully insured members will receive a reminder that emergency room visits for non-emergency care are subject to limited coverage or may not be covered for the full cost of the emergency room visit, as outlined in the Certificate of Coverage.

Providers received the information in the June Network Bulletin and on uhcprovider.com. If a claim is determined to be non-emergent, the provider may complete an attestation form to attest if the event met the definition of an emergency consistent with the prudent layperson standard.

Member will receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) with language describing the reason for the limited coverage for an emergency visit that is determined to be non-emergency. There are member appeal rights based on state guidelines, which are stated on the EOB.

Contact your Cornerstone representative for more information.
