ODI Agent Licensure Renewal Information

January 15, 2021/in Continuing Education, Cornerstone Updates, Employee Benefits, Individual, Licensing, Ohio Department of Insurance /by Cornerstone

The following information was originally released by the Ohio Department of Insurance.

Beginning January 1, 2021 the Ohio Department of Insurance will begin sending license renewal notifications via email instead of U.S. Mail.  Renewal notification emails will be sent approximately 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days prior to an agent’s license expiration date to email addresses on file with the department.

This is a departure from the previous notification schedule, which included a 90 day licensure renewal notification via U.S. mail and a 30-day electronic licensure renewal notification.

What Does This Mean for Me?

If your license renews in November 2020, December 2020, January 2021, or February 2021 you will still receive the 90 day U.S. mail licensure renewal notification, as well as the 30-day electronic licensure renewal notification.

If your license renews in March 2021 or after you will NOT receive the 90 day U.S. mail licensure renewal notification. Instead, you will receive three electronic renewal notifications—approximately 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days prior to your license expiration date.

Do I Need To Do Anything?

Yes! Make sure that your contact information is correct, especially your email address.  Please request contact information updates via the National Insurance Producer Registry’s (NIPR) Contact Change tool.

Ohio Department of Insurance Licensing Renewal Notifications Change

December 3, 2020/in Continuing Education, Employee Benefits, Individual, Licensing, Ohio Department of Insurance /by Cornerstone

According to the Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI), starting January 1, 2021, the ODI will begin sending license renewal notifications by email instead of U.S. Mail. Renewal notification emails will be sent approximately 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days prior to an agent’s license expiration date to email addresses on file with the department. This is a departure from the previous notification schedule, which included a 90-day licensure renewal notification by U.S. Mail and a 30-day electronic licensure renewal notification. Click here for more information.

Additionally, legislation recently passed that provides a temporary extension of license expiration dates until July 1, 2021, for any license-holder who has a license expiration date that falls between March 9, 2020, through April 1, 2021. You can find more information about this change on our Insurance and Coronavirus COVID-19 page.

Medical Mutual Extends Transitional ACA Policies Through 2021

April 1, 2020/in Carrier, Employee Benefits, Individual, Medical Mutual, Ohio Department of Insurance /by Cornerstone

Following the Ohio Department of Insurance’s memo extending transitional policies through 2021, Medical Mutual will allow their transitional individual and small group business to renew their non-ACA-compliant coverage through the 2021 plan year.

Grandmothered individuals and groups will not be mapped to ACA-compliant plans effective January 1, 2021, as previously planned. Instead, all qualifying transitional plans will be able to keep their current plans at least through their next renewal. Depending on the renewal date, certain policies may be extended until later in the year.

Ohio Insurance License Renewal and Continuing Education Relief During COVID-19

April 1, 2020/in Legislation, Licensing, Ohio Department of Insurance /by Cornerstone

The Ohio Department of Insurance recently announced that Governor DeWine signed House Bill 197, which includes relief to insurance license-holders whose license expires during the coronavirus pandemic.

This bill applies to any individual or business entity with an active license with the Ohio Department of Insurance, including major lines agents; limited line agents; title agents; title insurance marketing representatives; managing general agents; public insurance adjusters and agents; reinsurance intermediary brokers and managers; surety bail bond agents; surplus lines brokers; third party administrators; and viatical settlement brokers.

In summary, if a license is set to expire during the state of emergency, it will remain valid and can be renewed until no later than 90 days after the state of emergency ends or December 1, 2020, whichever comes first. All late fees will be waived and license holders do not need to take any actions to receive the extension.

The deadline for continuing education requirements has also been extended, though license holders are encouraged to continue their requirements to the best of their ability so as to not overwhelm the system when the state of emergency ends.

Any person who is in the process of obtaining their initial license will be allowed to sit for an examination past the 180-day expiration of their license education course completion certificate.
